Tanki Maraka: the US Radar Base 50 Miles from Venezuela

Just as today, the Dutch Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao had oil refining infrastructure back in World Wa rTwo. After some German naval action in the Caribbean early in the war, the Dutch government invited US forces to move onto the islands as security. This became part of US Caribbean Command, and from 1942 until 1947 the US had, among other things, a radar installation on Bonaire at Tanki Maraka. I had a chance to visit a few years ago while scuba diving on the island as part of what is now my second channel (@DeepDiveWithIan). With the US threatening war with Venezuela now, it seems rather topical, so I figured I’d do something with the video…

If you are on Bonaire, it’s an interesting site to see – you can find more information here:

    • A forgotten place as opposed to a forgotten weapon? It’s a bit of a stretch but scarcely ‘inappropriate.’ Inappropriate would be a ‘Pride & Pacifism Parade’ or kabuki theater.

  1. Ian, while you’re covering the history of this area, check out Macqueripe Bay Trinidad, a USN submarine base (with terrific diving possibilities!)

  2. I did spend some time, considering a vacuum powered “Dildo” you know, given the prevalence of Hoovers; batteries… Eh, should have realised the “Power” when I got sent a talking Eric Cartman. Never struck me, Eric might fly… Meh, my bag.

    • You know as an attachment. In/out, in via the hoover – Out valve spring. Fly now, via batteries “dildos” bombs… 2,025 yrs or so after Jesus emergered again from a chocolate egg. Money lenders in temples eh, fair play to him I say.

      • Flying bomb camera things seems obvious now… Anyway. Won’t win you a war on there own eh, think the rest of the world can take that away.
