Aimpoint Square: An Ambitious Failed Prototype

Between 1990 and 1993, Aimpoint experimented with a red dot optics that was pretty ambitious on several fronts. It used a rectangular window to maximize field of view for hunting rifles and shotguns (this was still Aimpoint’s main market at this point). It used a solar panel on top as a backup power source, and it was almost entirely made of plastic, including the main collimating lens. Unfortunately, the project proved unsuccessful, largely because of manufacturing challenges with the plastics. The body was difficult to keep properly rigid, and it was difficult to make a sufficiently precise main lens out of plastic.

    It still is, as anyone who has a $5.99 pair of drugstore “reading glasses” can attest.

  2. The non-glass lenses of my “glasses” are optically outstanding and lighter, but also considerably more expensive than glass lenses.

  3. I have said this before, and nobody said anything – Might be nonsense. But if you had an Sa80 Susat sight. And you bolted onto the front a laser “Pen” so you could move its mount up/down left/right, and the laser pen faces you… Apart from, theres a scope around it, and the beam hits a mirror and goes out the front of the sight – The magnifier, the sight you are looking into. If its a decent “Laser pen” will your recticule I.e. The dot, not be the same at 200, 400, or 600. On a focus for, a turn in the sight paralex is is it at the same. If so, if you look above the sight at 100m will you not just see the dot. And thus is that not a decent, scope. It might not be, just asking.
