Moroccan Unique Rr51 at the Hot Summer BUG Match

It’s pretty hot out here in the southern Arizona summer, so I figured I’d lean into it. For the BUG Match this month, I have an-Moroccan police Unique Rr51. This is a simple blowback .32 ACP pistol made by MAPH in a bunch of variations for many decades. It holds 9 rounds in the magazine, and I’ve paired it with a vaguely North African Foreign Legion set of kit just for fun.

Ultimately, the match went amazingly well until that last stage. My 9 rounds was not enough to complete the course of fire there, and it was worth so many points that it outweighed all the other stages. Ah well…

  1. Hi all,
not MAPH – instead MAPF, what stands for “Manufacture d’ Armes Pyrénées Français”, better known under its brand name “UNIQUE”. During WW 2 the later renamed “Rr51” was the “Kriegsmodell” which was produced by MAPF for the Wehrmacht. The postwar designation “Rr51” refers to the fact that the pistol contained only two coil springs—one large and one small (French: “ressort à spirale”). Hence the use of an uppercase and a lowercase letter. Production resumed in 1951, which is why the model is designated “Rr51.”

  2. Hi Ian,
Are you sure that this pretty little gun is an R51 ? As far as I know, the R51 version has a short extractor whereas the gun you brilliantly used in your video seems to have a long extractor. If I am correct, your gun is a Unique R17.
Regards from a frequent R17 user, in France.

  3. This Unique is basically a WWI Spanish Ruby made in France. The Germans changed the design from internal to external hammer, a great improvement in that you will never, ever, have trouble field-stripping it. See Bloke on the Range channel, specifically The Chap on Rubys. I missed a chance to buy one.
