Glock 26: Glock’s First Sub-Compact Pistol

The Glock 26 was introduced in 1995 alongside the Glock 27. These were sub-compact pistols with 3.43 inch barrels chambered for 9x19mm (the 26) and .40 S&W (the 27). These were Glock’s first foray into. the subcompact market, and they offered a compelling package. These were small, lighter than the all-metal options available at the time, had the simple operation of the other Glock pistols, and magazine compatibility with other Glocks. Introduced just after the magazine limitations of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, they also offered the combination of the smallest pistol and largest magazine (10+1 in 9mm and 9+1 in .40) under the new restrictions.

The first several years of production were basically Generation 2.5 in overall Glock terminology; they had finger grooves without and texturing. They also had three-pin frames to withstand the snappier recoil of their small size and a new dual recoil spring was developed for them. Later, they would be offered in the Gen 3, 4, and 5 configurations.

  1. OFF-TOPIC so ignore if you wish
Recently USAF bolted Skyraider II name at OA-1K https://www.airandspaceforces.com/air-force-oa-1k-skyraider-ii/
So I suppose it is superior to original Skyraider that is AD (read: ABLE DOG) aeroplane https://www.militaryfactory.com/aircraft/detail.php?aircraft_id=144
Yet Skyraider II, yet it is slower AND have less hardpoints (10 vs 11) AND have less range. So why they think it is superior or this is some kind of USAF hermetic joke?

    • The original proposal in 1969 was for a radically-revised P-51D Mustang;

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piper_PA-48_Enforcer

      And before that an equally heavily modified T-28 Trojan;

      https://www.aso.com/seller/6759/148873/YAT-28E_Articles_N28YAT.pdf

Incidentally, the crash of the first prototype on 27 Mar 1963 occurred about two miles from my house. I was used to hearing the turboprops howling overhead at near-treetop level; the crash came as a bit of a surprise.

The North American OV-10 Bronco was also a result of this development program, and in the end was the only one that actually entered production and service.

It must be remembered that while the AX program that resulted in the A-10 “Warthog” was also planned as a successor to the old “Spad”, it and the ADCOIN (ADvanced COunter-INsurgency) program that resulted in these aircraft were two entirely separate development programs with fundamentally different objectives.

Put simply, these were intended to kill VC. The Hog was intended to kill Russian tanks.

As for a permissive AD environment, I wouldn’t want to be in a cropduster flying over people with MANPADs who didn’t like me. That big turbine exhaust is an awfully attractive target for even a primitive rear-aspect IR homer like SAM-7.

      • “(…)wouldn’t want to be in a cropduster flying over people with MANPADs who didn’t like me(…)”
Additionally according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L3Harris_OA-1K_Skyraider_II aircraft is not designed to fit ejection seats. Which is another aspect inferior to Skyraider, though it use peculiar egress system code-named YANKEE https://ejectionsite.com/yankee.htm which has rocket which pulled pilot via his harness. YANKEE is not 0-0 system, but still sound better than no ejection system at all.

      • You spend a lot of time speculating about shooting down cropdusters? Valor takes curioser and curioser forms in these times…

      • Well, you say you wouldn’t like to be in said modified crop duster with folk potentially firing manpads at you… Although, it does look like it might be quite fun; with all it’s gadgets, weapons
etc, I mean if you are going to get “Shot” in a war – This way you could Stuka dive bomb them, while going “NEEEEEEW Take zat Englisher pig dog schweinhunt!” out loud with a Japanese flag tied around your head, like you did as a child with your model Stuka and toy soldiers; before playstations had been invented clearly. Anyhoo, just saying probably worse ways to get killed in a war…

        • Says on Wikipedia the Mig21 with mass production was as cheap as a BMP 1 “Which is like a crap wee tank thing” which leads me to conclude, are we doing something wrong; I mean in a war would I not be more effective in a “Flying coffin” I mean if it was that cheap it seems a no brainer, I could doubtless have flown that jet fighter straight at Adolf etc while pressing every button it had to fire at russians etc. What are we spending millions on f35’s for.

          • Personally I would spend our entire defence budget on Mig21’s give the pilots Sa80’s and say think of yourselfs as dragoons, thats your horse and there is a rifle “Don’t over think it, you have a parachute.” right… Now you Elbonian mofos what do you think of that 200,000
fully armed Mig21s coming at you right now.

          • Probably improve recruitmemt, think that movie… Star… What was called, troopers… Those bug things, want to know more? “Right you would, you get a flying coffin; who wouldn’t go for that?” fact more folk than now, more than now. Yes they’ll still be a role for hairdressers, but most young people would be dying to get a mig21 aye you can paint teeth on it (These are cheap these planes right? “Yes Vlad” Ok, carry on.)

          • “(…)Mig21(…)”
Unless intentional show of disdain at Mikhail I. Gurevich: MiG-21.

            “(…)as cheap as(…)”
Keep in mind that due to how Soviet economy was organized price were often not as reliable indicator as in Western nations.

“(…)have flown that jet fighter straight(…)”
In order to do that you need to first take-off. Are you able to do so in MiG-21 which is infamous for low speed handling.

          • Wikipedia said mass production made it cost as much as BMP 1, I am just saying; think outside the box, why bother making BMP 1’s now, the cold war has gone hot.

          • “(…)spend our entire defence budget on Mig21(…)”
MiG-21 was never intended to be sole fighter or USSR and its production overlap with TwinEngineSu-15, with former being intended as frontline fighter and latter with intended user being Войска ПВО страны.

          • Entire defence budget, no more sending folk to be machine gunned; give them cheap Mig21’s. Best way, 200,000 Mig 21’s “With R2D2’s” vs Gayto; they wouldn’t know what hit them, be over, just like that… Peace.

          • “Look give them an AK and explain they are Dragoons, technically; 90% will understand, and 80% will deliver a massive shock.” It’ll work, fancy planes will be shot down. Why prolong it.

          • This is highly disturbing. These seem to be Trump narratives generated by AI, particularly regarding terminating F-35. I’m thinking for these to happen to turn up here, about the only blog/site I read on-line, they must be being spammed out in huge quantities over the Net as a whole.

        • “(…)could Stuka dive bomb(…)”
Please, prove beyond reasonable doubt that Skyraider II is so arranged it could go from near vertical to level flight without damaging itself in this process.

          • No idea, looks good though doesn’t it. I wouldn’t care personally, if I could land it on a Taliban member; job done. Ideally it would explode and kill his family and distant relatives. And if I had to strafe a few peasants prior in a kindergarten,
for aiming purposes so be it. What do you say R2? Can’t belive you said no, you leftie. Be firing at us with man pads…

          • You are talking to a guy who thinks 200,000 planes is a viable option. In that world, Wiley Coyote can plunge to Grand Canyon’s bottom sans injury.

  2. “(…)introduced in 1995(…)Glock 27(…)with 3.43 inch barrel(…)smallest pistol and largest magazine(…)9+1(…)”
This sound very close to Para-Ordnance P10-40
    https://modernfirearms.net/en/handguns/handguns-en/canada-semi-automatic-pistols/para-ordnance-p14-45-eng/
which also fired .40 cartridge and sported double-stack magazine. Basic (full-size) Para Ordnance automatic pistols appeared in 1980s, but when exactly were smaller versions (P10-40 and P10-45) introduced? How expensive were both Glock 27 and P10-40 at year of each introduction? How did these two fared at U.S. market?

  3. “(…)limitations of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, they also offered the combination of the smallest pistol and largest magazine (10+1 in 9mm and 9+1 in .40) under the new restrictions.(…)”
Wait… if this caused capacity 10 or lower to be more desirable at that time, then would not result in drive for more powerful cartridges? Was that intention of author of said ban?

    • Come on, the whole ‘narrative’ then was ‘many shots bad.’ It was the typical spasm where laws are drafted to address the hysteria du jour. Actual effects of the law will be ignored until they spark the next hysteria. Social policy in these times is driven by the conviction that if we all clap loudly enough, there are no problems

  4. I remember test-firing those in about 2001-2, and being very impressed. A rather “special” colleague was hitting 6” plates at 25 and even 50 metres every time with a 26.

I’d still (with some reservations) prefer an HK P7 (wonderful pistol), but the 26/27 are outstanding,

    • Somebody bring back the P7 or a suitable affordable clone, please. Or give me three grand to buy one of those revived ones from Texas.

      • Give you 3 grand? Buy yourself a High Point, turn bandit and get your own 3 grand. Show some initiative lad, make the ghost of Anton Long proud

  5. Wee r2d2 robot things with each, mass produced… “Can I eject r2d2?” nope engage krauts, door locked; theres one behind you and up beedeebeep! “Cheers” no worries you can eject now, report to your next base for replacement systemssssss… (Relatively cheap A.I R2d2 target assist co-pilot robot buddy, to aid with inexperienced pilots, it can take off etc.) The future.

    • Anyway, I found that interesting personally in regards A.I… As prior, the T.V ad’s said; some shit I could type, to get a fucking burger anyway… I am not that, that lazy “Not only does it get delivered I can’t even be arsed typing it in.” No… A.I we could program R2D2 tell it, of every air to air, air to ground, ground to air, Moby dick anything anyone can think of… Which could assist, in it saying there’s a kraut behind you drop the fecker thus. I see…

      • Bit strange, you could see yourself thinking about R2 there plummeting to the ground… Futurama, Bender. After saving you. Ha.

    • “(…)can take off(…)”
Please be more clear, do you want said flying apparatus to be steered by automaton XOR human?

      • I want, I suppose R2D2 to be able to take a young conscript into the sky; I then want them him/her to drop a kraut, like they wanted to; as ever… But you know on mass, I think that will work out better than getting them machine gunned on the ground.

        • “(…)drop a kraut(…)”
Why this could not be done automatically or by operator steering said machine from afar?

          • R2D2 would help, the pilot engage the target, which they would do conventially. But an R2 would aid; inexperince… Alot. I still think it is better that being machine gunned on mass anyway, but an R2D2 I think would turn the tide if Mig21’s could be so numerous via cost.

          • At the end of the day, what are wars? Are they, something that folk in cocked hats do… Or should they be, something the people actually win, at?

          • I think, I feel… Somewhere, there is an urge for a victory. Regardless of politics. Now.

  6. I read that the British, and Yanks have much more combat experience via this past 2 decades “Which counts” it does, as you’d expect. At not winning, which affects recruitment. Probably. Meaning, aye it is experience for retained troops; which are diminishing. Anyway, whatever.
