2-Gun Match: Enfield Jungle Carbine & Martini-Henry

https://youtu.be/IuSw8VbiRT

I have been wanting to bring my new (to me) No5 MkI Enfield “Jungle Carbine” out to a match, and chose this month’s 2G-ACM to do it. In addition I am joined by Tom, who is shooting an original Mk IV Martini-Henry, complete with black powder .577-450 ammunition.

This was a three-stage match, but we chose to only film the two rifle stages (the third was pistol-only).

  1. But is mag. removal for jams an SOP thing? I’ve never seen it removed out side disassembly.Never seen a SMLE jam.Yes I know it happens.

    • The Lee-Enfield magazines were not supposed to be swappable or normally removed. One magazine was fitted for one rifle. All loading was to be done with stripper clips. Things can be rather fussy when removing and reinserting the magazine. Not a straight forward task like on modern magazine feed rifles. What I can find states that the magazine should not be removed except for cleaning and maintenance.

With that said, I have a feeling that removing the magazine to clear a jam was not by the book.

Here is a video that discusses the proper way to load an Lee-Enfield and how to clear a jam without removing the magazine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOYTdoQkFrM

To add insult to injury, I am thinking that Private McCollum did not listen to the Sargent, did not load his stripper clips correctly, did not know the proper drill to clear a jam, and needs to be put on a month of KP duty to make sure he improves his attention to instruction.

  2. No use trying for rapid fire with that Martini, you’ll just wind up in a fog bank. A number of Plains tribes called such irons “smoke poles,” and you can see why.

  3. Sorry Ian, I’ve been a follower and supporter through Patreon since the beginning but I don’t know if I’ll be able to follow your work anymore. YouTube won’t play your videos and Utreon will not allow me to create an account. I have no idea what is going on but until I figure out how to be allowed into Utreon I’m gone.

      • Thanks, I’ll try that but I want to move my $5/month support from Patron to Utrom but when I attempt to set up an account with Ultron I get “Unable to Create Account”. I have not been able to figure out what the issue is. It makes me a nervous about giving this site my credit card information.

  4. Pleased to see you’ve got another No5 MkI. The one I bought off you years back is still one of my favorite rifles, and a terrific conversation starter (“oh, you watch Forgotten Weapons? Well, let me tell you…”). I’d like to say that it’s a joy to shoot as well, but it’s a sin to tell a lie— most folks have had enough after a single charger.
