Early Automatic Pistols

Successful self-loading handguns began appearing in the 1890s. Their development was simplified by the low pressures used by many pistol cartridges at the time (as opposed to rifle development using large military cartridges). Two of the more iconic designs are the C96 “Broomhandle” Mauser and the Luger, but there were many other designs at the time.
